Christmas travel could be affected by flood threats in California and heavy snow in New England
Intense downpours that could trigger dangerous flood threats in California are putting a damper on Christmas Eve travel plans, while the New England area braces for heavy snow later in the week.
A sweeping flood watch stretching more than 800 miles along California’s coast and interior plains is in effect this week atmospheric rivers move through.
Residents of Southern California were bracing Wednesday for a powerful winter storm forecast to bring dangerous flooding as well as rock and mudslides to the region, threatening property and snarling holiday travel plans.
Redding Mayor Mike Littau said in a Facebook post that a person alerted 911 when they became stuck and water entered their vehicle. Though a Redding police officer was able to swim to the vehicle, break the windows, bring the individual to shore and perform CPR, the person did not survive, and an investigation into a cause of death is ongoing.

Atmospheric rivers will spread flood threat to California, after soaking Washington state, Oregon
A parade of Pacific storms accompanied by atmospheric rivers will continue to march into the West Coast through Christmas, spreading the threat of heavy rain from already flooded areas of western Washington and Oregon to California.
" Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible" across most of Northern California, including the entire Sacramento Valley, northern San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills, according to the National Weather Service. Yosemite National Park and the Yosemite Valley could also see flooding, the weather service said.
